Last week I had the opportunity to attend Simrit's concert in San Francisco. She is known for her innovation with mantra music and her ability to transmit a potent level of humanity and pure love through her sound. After the concert I was standing in the back of the room talking to my friend when Simrit came up and gave me a wonderful long hug. She has a beautiful personality and a soothing presence.
But what stroke me most was the unexpected and genuine hug she gave me, because it connected with me at a soul level and it is one of the things I observe in human interactions and relationships in our society. Some interactions leave a long lasting positive imprint on us.
I believe there is a healing power and a bonding force in a hug and in meaningful small gestures. We shouldn’t underestimate them.
And here I am referring to genuinely given/received hugs. The hug that make you feel like you just entered a timewarp and experienced a mesh of two souls. It’s comforting.
Through our human connections and interactions we see the reflection of who we are, we bring out the endless layers of ourselves, the light stuff and the heavy stuff, and it can take years (or even our lifetime) to really remove the unnecessary layers and be our true selves in this world. We all go through deep transformations, one way or another. We all experience joy and pain, sad moments, happy moments. We all live in our own reality, while partaking in other people’s realities. But even when reality seems so hard to bear, it doesn’t have to be lived alone.
Healing must take place for a positive transformation to occur and we need to want it, we need to open ourselves to it. It takes time, it takes inner power and the willingness to be vulnerable.
There are times in our lives that we’d need a friend, a lover, a family member, or even a stranger to help us overcome our most difficult challenges and be there for us during the tough moments, but the real work and transformation comes from within.
No one is responsible to fix another person’s life, however we can still hold space for others while they are working through their stuff. When it’s safe, we can support others through their healing process, with compassion and free of judgment.
That is why true connections are important. They can be transformational.
Sometimes small gestures could help someone that is having a bad day to have a more a positive experience. A genuine hug could awaken a beautiful part of them that was dormant.
True connections make our burdens lighter, open our hearts and help to heal our souls.
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” ~Leo Buscaglia
Some days the tide is high, some days the tide recedes. It’s all part of a natural flow. The flow of life. The course that it must take speaks to our hearts. The transformation is constantly in the flux of what can seem nebulous, but behind the fuzzy moments, the hazy thoughts, the transformation is undoubtedly happening. Be still when you must. Merge with the flow when you are called to do so.
The signal will appear, and you will know.
I find that change can bring immense learning. It brings a new perspective or a new chance to write our story in a different way.
While we can't erase what has been done and said, we can choose to heal ourselves, to forgive ourselves and others as it is the way to true inner peace.
We are taught to accept traditions, religious teachings, to choose "right" over "wrong", even when we didn't fully understand or agree with it.
And because of that we live many years of our lives not in agreement with who we truly are or want to be as we were trained to follow all these other agreements that in fact were someone else's realities, the world dream and not our dreams.
And it's not until we free ourselves from limited thinking and the unjust beliefs and agreements (which only serve to make us feel powerless and be punished instead of helping us to love and accept ourselves) that we start walking our own path which we deliberate choose to create without guilt, without shame.
It's not until we renew our agreements that we can transform our lives and shape our own dreams.
While our dreams may still seem to collide (to some extent) to some other people's dreams, it will also bring together those that have similar dreams because the power to co-create is miraculously strong and our lives are then expressed as our art, a piece of art that is constantly in the making, constantly changing as we also change and grow.
And even on our cloudy days where our art doesn't look beautiful or meaningful to us, we have to remember that although imperfect we can still choose to love it.
